If you wish to become a professional footballer, it is prudent to start early in life. Playing at the school and college levels will help you hone your skills and develop your game knowledge. Moreover, the earlier you start, the quicker you will learn about the values of discipline and how it will help you become a better footballer.
Mack Prioleau – How can discipline build your skills as a footballer?
Mack Prioleau has played football in his freshman year at college and is based in Fort Worth, Texas. He says that football is a team sport, and everyone contributes to the wins and losses. However, when it comes to discipline in the game, it refers to the job of understanding your role in the team well. There are 11 players in a team, and every one of them contributes to the game when it comes to rules, techniques, and fundamentals.
The role of coaches when it comes to incorporating discipline in the game
The first rule of discipline is to keep calm and be cool. Coaches of football teams are aware of the fact that discipline issues among the players are the most challenging things they deal with. This can pertain to both training sessions and their individual behavior on the field.
In college football, coaches are working with teenagers, and the most common discipline issues they need to deal with are late arrivals during training sessions, the unwillingness to listen or abide by instructions, over-enthusiastic players, unacceptable conduct on the field towards co-players, spectators, the referee, coaching staff and more.
These breaches of discipline need to be assessed individually; however, coaches generally have the following in place when it comes to ensuring everything is in order both on the pitch and off it-
- There is a general behavior policy in place for all the players on the team. This policy should be clear for college footballers to understand so that they can abide by all its instructions without hassles at all. Coaches should explain it to them in simple terms so that they agree to them without reluctance.
- Keep team talks and instructions precise and short. Young players lose attention and focus when they are being instructed. It is prudent for a football coach to ensure that the guidelines and instructions they give the players are to-the-point and precise.
- Appreciate good players. When a coach appreciates a good player’s performance, this, in turn, boosts the morale and team spirit of the other players. They get inspired and go the extra mile to perform well in the game too.
Mack Prioleau sums up by saying that players should remain cool when things do not go their way. It is tough for a young person not to get angry at things as their emotions generally run high. However, discipline helps college footballers stay cool both on and off the pitch with practice and patience. In this way, these footballers are able to hone their playing skills and attitude positively to become professional footballers later in life with success!
